This past summer Blake, Sadie and myself drove over to Cades Cove.
There are alot of Black Bears in that section of the Smokies.
They are not tame, but they are use to seeing alot of people. I have never drove through there and not at least seen a couple on the edge of the woods looking for food.
During the summer months when the park is busy, it’s not uncommon to see bears….but the sad thing is, there are some foolish people getting way to close, just to get a picture…and I’m talking within 10-20 feet from the bear.
Â
The day we went was like all the rest, a mama bear and 2 cubs were just on the edge of the woods, turning over rocks looking for food.
Cars were stopping in the middle of the road, blocking traffic, drivers jumping out, following along snapping pictures.
We stop behind the last car in line and just watch these poor souls.
Our windows are up and the A/C IS on, about that time another bear walks out of the woods from the other direction.
Walks around the front of our truck and walks over to the driverside window and looks in.
We are only a few apart with only the window in between us. She sits down, she smells around the window, looks in at us, then walks back the same way she had just came from.
I’m glad I had the camera handy when she was looking in at us….

What a beautiful face. How sad that these bears are so enamored of humans as a source of food. When the inevitable incident occurs, the bears will lose.

My brother is a bear expert. Or so he claims. Anyway, I am always struck at how, well…friendly they look. Not that I have any intention of finding out, but bears don’t look mean.

Cute! Wouldn’t want to be that close without the armour of a car, but that bear’s nose in the mirror is adorable. And, interestingly enough, my husband’s grandpa was born in Cade’s Cover before they made it a park.

What an incredible photo! You were fortunate to be in your car. The area around Cade’s Cove is beautiful.

She just wanted to reward you for staying in the car and not being an idiot by trying to win a Darwin Award

Great bear photo, Raven. I don’t know how I missed it before.

Your experience with the tourists in Cades Cove is exactly the same as Ann and I had in 2007. The same time of year, too. All the magnificent colors of the Smokies, but all the ignorant people thinking that the bears are tame and approachable. Bumper to bumper traffic.
